The Tenth District economy grew at a healthy pace in the first quarter of 1994, buoyed by gains in construction and durable manufacturing and continued strength in agriculture. In addition, the district experienced robust employment growth and real personal income rebounded from a flood-related dip last year.

Survey of Agricultural Credit Conditions

Agricultural credit conditions in the Tenth Federal Reserve District strengthened during the first quarter of 1994, according to a survey of 323 agricultural bankers. Farmland values rose, farm loan demand grew, and repayments on farm loans improved. But sounding a note of caution were a turnaround in farm interest rates and prospects for weaker cattle prices.

Continued Improvement at Tenth District Banks

Performance at commercial banks in Tenth District states continued to improve in 1993. Profitability increased due to lower loan loss provisions and net noninterest expense. Moreover, asset quality improved and loan growth rebounded. All district states shared in the improvement, with Colorado and New Mexico showing the biggest overall gains.
