Regional Economic Update

The Tenth District economy continued to improve in the fourth quarter. The district added jobs at a healthy pace, pushing the unemployment rate down. The manufacturing sector showed signs of improvement, and the farm economy strengthened. Cold weather boosted demand for the district s energy production but slowed activity in the construction industry.

Survey of Agricultural Credit Conditions

Agricultural credit conditions in the Tenth Federal Reserve District continued to improve during the fourth quarter of 1993. A survey of 317 agricultural bankers showed that higher farmland values, lower farm interest rates, higher grain prices, and stronger farm loan demand all signaled improvement in the district farm economy. In addition, farm income prospects in 1994 are generally favorable, although crop producers are expected to fair better than livestock producers.

Manufacturing Job Losses in the Recovery: The District Outperforms the Nation

This article examines job growth in the district's key manufacturing industries and in the seven district states. The article shows that while thousands of manufacturing jobs have been lost since the recovery began, the decline in the district has been less than in the nation. The primary strength of the region's manufacturing sector has been the food processing industry.
